Web Site Building 101

Web site building 101
This module we investigate building web sites and learn skills needed to add content and multimedia. Many educators are able to create web sites using free web editors Weebly, Wix, Wordpress and others. Students use the class web page to connect the classroom from home. A student who is sick can keep a part of classroom activities. Students and parents can also check for homework or projects on website pages.

In this module we also explored a few teacher sites that offer insights into what teacher websites are used for. Here are a few that I enjoyed: Mrs Bogenhagen 1st Grade from San Diego site offers a variety of resources for students and parents. I particularly was impressed with the First Grade Book Review link. Students give YouTube video book reviews . I was very impressed and I plan to bring this technology to my teachers. Another favorite was Mrs. Finley’s Class her site offers general classroom communications and also I enjoyed her link to tour her class. Finally I like to showcase one of my teacher’s website. Belle Chasse Academy’s computer teacher Mrs. Madere site exhibits good examples of her students work. Parents enjoy visiting her site to see their child’s class work. These are students utilizing technology to complete assignments. Ms Madere Computer Class

These sites allow teachers to generate collaboration among students and parents. Teacher web sites also make a connection between home and the classroom. A teacher Web site helps improve teaching time. Links shared through websites connect students to resources that provide a wide variety of help with school work.

Google Hangouts

Hangouts are one of the main ways to connect with people on Google+; there are two types, one is broadcast and can be saved on YouTube, and the other is a text/image/video call. Used alongside Google's other products e.g. Google Drive they will really enhance your Google+ experience. Explore Google Plus Hangout Rooms

A few A-Ha’s from teacher web sites:

  • Be sure to have parent contact links

  • keep your front page updated regularly

  • be mindful of backgrounds and font colors

  • be sure kids can be photpraphed before posting their pictures

  • Content is key reason parents will visit your site

A few A-Ha’s from Google Hangouts:

  •  The quality of the video camera and microphone matter a lot.

  •  run your hangout on the fastest computer you have

  • avoid backlighting, which will make a person dark in the video.

  • Minimize the amount of programs running on your computer

  • use a wired line (not wireless) to maximize your upload speed.

A few A-Ha’s from weebly:

  • make sure you publish your site

  • maintain you blog

  • save your work before you before you preview
